OCR: Shrubs are the commonest plants in deserts, and are in fact small bushy trees without a distinct trunk. Some desert shrubs like the mesquite may grow as a shrub or a tree depending on the conditions. Shrubs, like cacti, are perennials - plants that live for several or many years. Desert shrubs often look as if they were planted in a pattern, with wide, even spaces between each plant. However, this space is not really empty - instead it contains an underground network of roots attached to each bush
